Below are a variety of resources for education about living liver donation:

UNOS Living Donation Guide (PDF)
Some highlights are also listed below:
- Living donation is 100% voluntary and confidential. Donors may choose to exit the process at any time, up to and including the day of surgery.
- Donors incur no medical costs related to testing, donation, or follow-up care. However, donors may require 8-12 weeks off work, and should ensure they have the financial or job security to enable donation.
- Donors complete a thorough medical evaluation. While a portion of this testing ensures a match to the recipient, the majority of screening is related to the DONOR’s physical, mental, and financial health to ensure positive outcomes following donation.
- Up to 70% of the donor’s liver is given to the recipient. The donor’s remaining liver will regrow to near its original size, and the transplanted portion will also grow to restore normal function in the recipient.
- While there are risks associated with any major surgery, most liver donors return to full lives. For a full breakdown of risks please review the information linked above or contact the University of Rochester at (585) 275-5875.
If you’ve reviewed this information and are interested in donation, you can complete the Health History Questionnaire HERE and check out the Next Steps for Potential Donors page for what’s to expect!
